Stop Waking Up With Back Pain: Get A Custom Mattress

Nothing ruins your day more than waking up with back pain.

Sure, a lot of things can happen in a day. But when you’re in pain from the very moment you wake up, it just puts you in the wrong mood. We’ve had clients from all around the Bay Area tell us about their old beds, and how they would wake up with less energy, feeling irritable and tired throughout the day.

That’s no way to live!

There are, of course, many possible causes for back pain (or should pain, or neck pain) when you wake up. More often than not, the culprit is your mattress.

If you can’t sleep another night knowing that you will wake up sore in the morning, it’s time to try a custom-made bed. By customizing your bed, you can get a more comfortable and supportive surface to sleep on. For example, to minimize back pain, you might want to try the following:

Up the firmness of your bed. Yes, everyone likes soft. But a slightly firmer bed will support your spine better, which leads to fewer mornings waking up with back pain. In fact, researchers over at Spine Universe have noted that sleepers using a medium-firm mattress have less back pain compared to people who use mattresses that are too soft (or too firm, for that matter.)

Switch up the top layer. If you’ve always had a traditional coil mattress, it might be time to try a memory foam top layer. Memory foam can contour to your body and even out the pressure as you sleep. It is especially comfortable if you sleep on your back. That said, maybe you’ve tried memory foam and, like many others, found the “sinking feeling” not to your taste. In these cases, it might be time to get the traditional support of coils underneath you. Most custom-made beds can be hybrid beds, using elements of both coils and foam. Get the combination right, and you’ll have the best of both worlds.

Try hypoallergenic/ all-natural materials. Sometimes the issue is not your bed’s firmness, but the materials themselves. Some people are sensitive to certain foams or fabrics, especially when they are synthetic. If the material of your bed is even slightly irritating, it can make you toss and turn more at night, leading to poorer quality sleep and, eventually, that dreaded morning back pain. If you suspect this is the case, all natural materials might be the way to go.

Finding a pillow that provides you with the right neck support can make a positive impact on your sleep.

Pay attention to the pillows. Most traditional pillows don’t provide adequate support for your neck, which can easily cause stiffness and soreness throughout your entire body. Some pillows also sleep “hot,” especially if they have memory foam that is not gel based. Along with your custom mattress, a good pillow can be a good investment in sleeping better.
